A faithful copy in lead of the original 18th century carved stone version of this model, made for Chiswick House, probably by John Cheere 1709 -1787, for Lord Burlington.
Of large proportions the lions are recumbent looking forwards with front paws outstretched, hind quarters curled around with tail under in a relaxed pose. A small number of 18th century versions of these lions are extant, however, these are the only models available today that can come close to replicating the grandeur and elegance of the large scale originals.
